District League Cup Winners 2018
Year 11 Boys Football Team
make it double cup success
The Wilnecote School’s Y11 boy’s football team returned to Mill Lane home of Coton Green FC after their recent Fazeley Shield win to secure the district league cup with a 4-2 win over the Lichfield Cathedral School and maintain a record of never being beaten in district football competition for 5 years.
It was the final game together for the Y11 boy’s football team who had enjoyed previous successes over the last 5 years at district, county and national level.
Going in to their final ever school game The Wilnecote teams had never lost to domestic opponents and they continued that tradition with another excellent display against a resilient and talented Lichfield Cathedral School.
Wilnecote started relatively brightly and dominated both early possession and territorial advantage but it was Lichfield Cathedral School who opened the scoring when the Wilnceote defence was turned from a hopeful ball played from midfield and an opposition striker stole in between a little indecision between the Wilnecote keeper and defender to make it 1-0.
Wilnecote rallied well and started to enjoy more possession and begun dominating the physical element of the game more and threatened in behind the Lichfield defence more often. Eventually the pressure paid off and ball played in from a wide position saw indecision in the Lichfield area and a mistake by the goal keeper and this was taken full advantage of by Sonny Cartwright who levelled the scoring right on half time to make it 1-1.
After a change in personnel but retaining the same shape and formation and aware that the game just required a little more quality in the final third to make their possession count Wilnecote started on the front foot straight away from kick off and Harry Fox recalled to the squad managed to find space on the right hand side of the box and rifled in Wilnecotes second to make the score 2-1.
Wilnecotes demeanour and body language grew in stature and they dominated further proceedings from a well worked goal executed from by Kieran Whelan from the edge of the area midway through the second half to make the score 3-1.
Oliver Woodroffe who began the match then re-joined play in centre midfield and the good footwork and manipulating the ball in a tight space, Oliver managed to curl the ball around the Lichfield keeper to make it 4-1 and Wilnecote were nearly home.
Lichfield Cathedral school rallied late on and scored a fine individual goal from their captain and centre midfield player to make it 4-2 and although they exerted more pressure in a desperate attempt to claw back the game the Wilnecote defence headed by keeper Max Miles stood fast and the weathered the late onslaught to preserve their 2 goal advantage and see the game out at 4-2 to be crowned double cup champions for the 2017/18 season.
A fantastic achievement not just in the 2 cup successes but in that the team remained unbeaten at district level for 5 years and it will be a long time before Wilnecote probably sees a team perform that feat for many years to come.
Well done boys.
