It’s that time of year again when here in the Performing Arts Department we present Arts Spectacular. Arts Spectacular is slightly different to any of the other performance evening’s that we do because it focuses on showcasing work that students have been doing in both Music and Drama throughout the year and it is a special celebration of their talents and successes.
This year we had a wide variety of performances from a group of year 8 students presenting a Stomp-inspired piece in which they created music using everyday objects such as broom, cups and a newspaper to Paranoid by Black Sabbath played on electric guitar.
We also had several new performers, who had never taken part in a performance here at The Wilnecote School before. These included some of our Year 7 students who played Ukulele’s and Piano and some Year 8 students including Yasmin Shigdar on guitar and Ben Ryan on drums to name but a few.
Being Arts Spectacular, we not only celebrating talented musicians but also talented performers with a group of Year 7, 8 and 9 students performing a piece they created as part of The Physical Fellowship project. The students worked with physical theatre company Highly Sprung Performance to create a piece which explores the issue of colonisation. The performance uses movement to tell the story of a village which was colonised by ‘the others’ who changed the villagers’ entire way of life. It was a compelling and thought-provoking performance which showcased many talented students and gave them the opportunity to work with students from other year groups, with everyone pulling together and supporting one another to make the piece a success.
I can’t quite believe that we are almost at the end of another academic year, it has gone by so fast, but Arts Spectacular is an excellent opportunity to reflect on all that the students have achieved this year, and we look forward to what they will continue to accomplish in the future.
